Famous stonemasons in Slovenia

The history of stonemasonry in Slovenia is rich with the names of masters whose craftsmanship and artistic talent shaped our cultural heritage. Below are some of the most important figures, grouped by the period in which they worked:

Middle Ages (Gothic Period)

• Master Paskalij (14th century): Known for his work on the Ljubljana Cathedral and other Gothic churches. He was one of the first stonemasons to organize into guilds.
• Ivan Juraj: Best known for his work on St. James’s Church in Ljubljana, where he crafted portals and other stone details.

Renaissance and Baroque

• Francesco Robba (1698–1757): Although Venetian by origin, Robba was one of the most important stonemasons to work in Slovenia. His most famous work is the Robba Fountain in Ljubljana’s Old Square, considered the pinnacle of Baroque sculpture in Slovenia.
